Leader Par Excellence

A Leader is best
When people barely know that he exists,
Not so good when people obey and acclaim him,
Worst when they despise him.
Fail to honor people,
They fail to honor you;
But of a good leader, who talks a little,
When his work is done, his aim fulfilled,
They will all say, “We did this ourselves.”

– Lao -Tzu, Chinese Philosopher (600 B.C.)

    • Yeah, I tend to agree with you…But good leaders always lead from the front, setting an example for the followers, showing them the direction, and empowering them to achieve goals. Here, I would like to quote James MacGregor Burns, the Leadership Guru, who said, “Leaders embrace values; values grip leaders. The stronger the value system, the more strongly leaders can be empowered and the more deeply the leaders can empower the followers.” So, at the end of the day, it is all about leading by empowering…that’s what perhaps Lao-Tzu had at the back of his mind…Thanks for visiting my blog and sharing…

  1. Indeed. I thought of my father when I read this. He was a very generous man and helped many people. Most of the time his assistance took place anonymously. I only knew of it because he would take me along with him when I was a child and I would stand quiet hearing arrangements made. I was expected to never speak of these acts of kindness.
    I recall a time when a very angry man said some very mean spirited things to my father at a public meeting whose council my father held a position on. My father could very easily have told the man that it had been he who had provided food, shelter, and money to his family when their home had burned. My father did not. Instead he responded with calm.
